Zachary M. Moretz

Zac is a partner and leads the firm’s Real Estate and Business Law Practice Group from our Concord office. He is a Certified Specialist by the North Carolina State Bar in Commercial Real Estate, and is also a licensed real estate broker. He practices in the areas of commercial real estate, real estate development, planned communities and homeowners’ associations, corporate law and motorsports law and has substantial experience in setting up residential, commercial and mixed-use developments of all kinds. Zac is a former general counsel to a large local developer, and currently represents the developers of many of the Concord area’s highest-profile real estate developments, including The Villages at Moss Creek, Afton Village, Harrisburg Town Center, Northgate Commons, The Enclave at Timber Ridge and The Village at Kellswater Bridge.

Zac is a native of Sanford, North Carolina and attended Ravenscroft High School in Raleigh. He graduated from Oglethorpe University with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Studies. He received his law degree from Wake Forest University School of Law where he was a member of the Student Trial Bar and was appointed a member of the Joseph Branch Chapter of the Inns of Court.

Zac enjoys all forms of motorsports and hopes to return to road racing soon. In his free time, he enjoys historic preservation and downtown redevelopment, lacrosse, soccer and coaching his children in sports.

Ronald A. Skufca

Ron is a partner and leads the firm's Litigation and Family Law Practice Group from the Charlotte office. His practice is concentrated in the areas of business litigation, construction law, and family law, whether in the context of litigation, arbitration or mediation. Ron works one on one with the firm's litigation clients to enable them to take an active role in their case and to make informed decisions. He achieves the goals of his clients by having the compassion to listen, thoroughly respond to questions and understand concerns, while representing them with unfaltering conviction in a manner consistent with their personal principles. Ron is proud that he has built his practice on personal referrals from existing clients and attorneys who know his reputation for building strong working relationships with clients in the course of providing zealous legal representation.

Ron received his Bachelor of Science degree in Commerce from the University of Virginia McIntire School of Commerce and his law degree from Wake Forest University School of Law.

Peter F. Morgan

Peter is Of Counsel in our Charlotte office. His principal practice areas include construction, real estate and general civil litigation.  He has significant experience with the trial, mediation and arbitration of a wide variety of disputes and claims, including lien and bond claims, insurance coverage issues, claims arising from construction defects and residential property disputes. 

Peter is a native of Knoxville, Tennessee, but grew up in Roanoke, Virginia. He earned his B.A., magna cum laude, from The American University in Washington, D.C. and his law degree from Washington and Lee University School of Law.

In addition to being a practicing attorney, Peter is also a licensed real estate broker in North Carolina and a licensed real estate salesperson in South Carolina.  He maintains a separate real estate brokerage business and is affiliated with the Randolph Road office of Helen Adams Realty in Charlotte.

Deborah S. Azzariti Deborah S. Azzariti

Deborah is an attorney practicing in the Concord office. Her practice is concentrated in the areas of residential real estate and commercial real estate. Prior to moving to North Carolina, Deborah practiced law in Atlanta, Georgia in the areas of workers' compensation defense, insurance defense and residential real estate law. In 2004, she relocated to Charlotte where she opened and solely managed a residential real estate closing office for an Atlanta based firm for over four years. Deborah joined Moretz & Skufca, PLLC in 2008 to expand the firm's real estate practice.

Deborah grew up in the suburbs of Orlando, Florida. She is a graduate of Wake Forest University, where she graduated magna cum laude and received her Bachelor of Arts degree in History with a minor in Communications. Deborah received her law degree from Emory University School of Law where she graduated with distinction. She served as a member on the school's Moot Court Special Team.

Deborah is active in her subdivision's Social Committee. She enjoys activities with her two boys and spending time on the ball field.

Jason S. Miller Jason S. Miller

Jason is Of Counsel in our Charlotte office. He is a registered Patent Attorney and his practice is concentrated in the procurement and enforcement of patents and in trademark and copyright matters, as well as litigation in the areas of unfair competition, trade secrets and business disputes.

Jason holds a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from the New Jersey Institute of Technology and a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Dayton School of Law in Dayton, Ohio. During his attendance at the University of Dayton, Jason was a member and coach of the school’s Moot Court Team and won several awards for oral advocacy. Prior to joining Moretz & Skufca, PLLC, Jason was a founding partner of the Charlotte law firm of Miller Bernard, PLLC (later merged to form Clements Bernard Miller). Before relocating to Charlotte, Jason was a litigation associate with the law firm of Young & Alexander Co. LPA in Dayton, Ohio, where his practice was concentrated in business litigation.

Ben S. Thalheimer Ben S. Thalheimer

Ben is Of Counsel in our Charlotte office. His practice is concentrated in the areas of family law, equitable distribution, custody, child support, alimony and divorce. Prior to joining Moretz & Skufca, PLLC, Ben served for 5 years as a Mecklenburg County District Court Judge. Prior to being elected to the bench, he was a Mecklenburg County Civil Magistrate concentrating in landlord-tenant law and contract law for 5 years, and a Criminal Magistrate prior to that. Ben served as a litigation associate at the Charlotte law firm James McElroy and Diehl, PA from 1986 through 1989. Prior to law school, Ben owned and operated a paramedical exam company in Charlotte and a cable television company in Watauga County, North Carolina, and worked in brand management for Proctor & Gamble Co.

Ben grew up in Blowing Rock, North Carolina. He is a graduate of Purdue University where he received a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Management and a minor in Quantitative Methods. Ben received his MBA from Northwestern University followed by a law degree from the University of Virginia.

Ben works with Habitat for Humanity and delivers meals for the MAP program. He is active in the Mecklenburg County Lawyer Referral Service and enjoys gourmet cooking, cycling, traveling and snow skiing.

David K. Self David K. Self

David is an associate attorney practicing in the Charlotte office. His practice is concentrated in the area of family law.

David is a native of Charlotte, North Carolina, and a graduate of North Mecklenburg High School. David graduated from Cornell University where he received his Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering and served as co-captain of the baseball team. After working four years as a civil engineer in New York City and the City of Charlotte, David graduated summa cum laude from North Carolina Central University School of Law. While at North Carolina Central, David was a member of the North Carolina Central Law Journal and a member of three different trial teams.

Prior to law school, David volunteered at the Children’s Law Center (now the Council for Children’s Rights) in its Custody Advocate Program. While in law school, he volunteered as a legal intern for an entire summer with the Children’s Law Center. David hopes to continue a relationship with the Council for Children’s Rights in the future.

David enjoys playing competitive softball and spending time with his fiancé, Sara, and their dog Jade.

Joshua T. Knipp Joshua T. Knipp

Josh is an associate attorney practicing in the Concord office. He practices in the areas of commercial real estate, real estate development, planned communities and homeowners' associations, corporate law and sports law and is also a licensed sports agent in the state of North Carolina.

Josh is a native of Defiance, Ohio and a graduate of Case Western Reserve University, located in Cleveland, Ohio. Josh received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and Communications Science while playing four years of varsity baseball. He received his law degree from Wake Forest University School of Law where he co-founded the Youth Advocacy Group. The group coordinated law students' involvement with the Winston-Salem youth community, including assisting with youth basketball leagues, tutoring underprivileged children, and a city-wide CommUnity Cares Day. He also was involved with the Community Law and Business Clinic.

Josh enjoys all forms of athletics and coaching youth sports. He spends his free time traveling, playing sports and spending time with his wife, Amanda.
